4-Day Mount Meru Trek
Overview:
Embark on an exciting journey up Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak. This trek offers breathtaking views, diverse ecosystems, and the unique opportunity to spot wildlife on the slopes of a dormant volcano.
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha
- Arrival: Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where your guide will greet you and transfer you to your lodge in Arusha.
- Activities:
- Pre-trek briefing with your guide.
- Gear check and final preparations.
- Accommodation: Arusha Coffee Lodge or similar
- Meals: Dinner
Day 2: Arusha – Momella Gate (1,500m) – Miriakamba Hut (2,514m)
- Morning: Drive to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park, the starting point of your trek.
- Trekking Details:
- Begin the hike through lush montane forests, keeping an eye out for giraffes, buffaloes, and colobus monkeys.
- Trekking distance: ~10 km (6.2 miles) | Time: 4–5 hours
- Highlights: Scenic views of wildlife and dense forest.
- Accommodation: Miriakamba Hut
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 3: Miriakamba Hut – Saddle Hut (3,570m)
- Morning: Ascend through the rainforest and into the heather and moorland zone.
- Trekking Details:
- Pass by Elephant Ridge for panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding plains.
- Trekking distance: ~8 km (5 miles) | Time: 4–5 hours
- Activities:
- Optional short hike to Little Meru (3,820m) for acclimatization and stunning sunset views.
- Highlights: Stunning views of Meru Crater and the cliffs.
- Accommodation: Saddle Hut
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4: Summit Day – Saddle Hut – Socialist Peak (4,566m) – Momella Gate – Arusha
- Early Morning: Begin the summit trek under the stars, following the dramatic ridgeline to Socialist Peak.
- Trekking Details:
- Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak: ~5 km (3.1 miles) | Time: 4–6 hours
- Descend back to Momella Gate: ~13 km (8 miles) | Time: 6–8 hours
- Activities:
- Reach the summit at sunrise, with incredible views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Rift Valley, and beyond.
- Descend back to the gate, where you’ll receive your climbing certificate.
- Transfer to your lodge in Arusha or to Kilimanjaro International Airport for departure.
- Highlights: Rewarding sunrise summit and incredible landscapes.
- Accommodation: Optional day-use room in Arusha (depending on departure time).
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
